New Delhi:
The cricket world is holding its breath as India’s star fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, faces a daunting challenge to regain full fitness in time for the ICC Champions Trophy, set to commence on February 19. Bumrah’s participation in the tournament is increasingly uncertain due to a back injury he sustained during the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney.
Bumrah’s recovery is being described as a ‘miracle’ if he manages to become 100% fit within the given timeline. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is already preparing backup plans, with Harshit Rana and Mohammed Siraj being considered as potential replacements. Bumrah is currently in touch with Dr. Rowan Schouten in New Zealand, who has previously treated him for a similar back injury that kept him out of the game for nearly a year between 2022 and 2023.
Bumrah’s back injury has cast a significant shadow over India’s preparations for the Champions Trophy. The injury occurred during the final Test against Australia, where Bumrah was forced to leave the field due to severe back pain. Despite his stellar performance in the series, claiming 32 wickets and being named the Player of the Series, his current condition raises serious doubts about his availability for the upcoming tournament.
The BCCI medical team is closely monitoring Bumrah’s condition and is in constant communication with Dr. Schouten. However, the chances of Bumrah being fully fit by the start of the Champions Trophy are slim. He has been advised to avoid any rigorous physical exercise, which further complicates his recovery process.
Given the uncertainty surrounding Bumrah’s fitness, the BCCI is exploring backup options. Harshit Rana and Mohammed Siraj are being considered as potential replacements, with Rana already part of India’s ODI squad for the England series. The selectors are cautious and will only consider Bumrah for the tournament if he is fully ready to take the field after completing his recovery process.
The BCCI has the flexibility to make changes to India’s squad for the Champions Trophy until February 11, providing a window of opportunity to adjust the team based on Bumrah’s progress. The board is taking a cautious approach, prioritizing Bumrah’s long-term health and significance to the team over the immediate need for his presence in the tournament.
As the Champions Trophy draws near, the focus remains on Bumrah’s recovery. The planned visit to New Zealand for further treatment is pending feedback, and the BCCI is keen to ensure that Bumrah does not rush back into action, given his history with back injuries. The selectors and the medical team are working in tandem to make an informed decision, but for now, Bumrah’s participation in the Champions Trophy remains a distant hope.
