PANAJI: Serious concerns over persistent water shortages and low pressure in Velim constituency were raised in the Goa Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, with Velim MLA Cruz Silva warning that residents are living under growing fear and uncertainty due to delayed works and inadequate technical support.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Silva said that despite repeated complaints, large parts of Velim continue to face irregular and weak water supply, severely affecting households and daily life.
“People in Velim are struggling to get even basic water supply. The pressure is low, pipelines are old and leaking, and there is no proper system in place to address complaints. This situation is creating anxiety and hardship for our residents,” Cruz Silva told the House.
He pointed out that a major project announced in the Goa Budget 2024–25 to replace the existing 300 mm pipeline and lay new ductile iron (DI) pipelines is still pending as no work order has been issued so far.
“The government has already announced funds for this project, but nothing has moved on the ground. Without issuing the work order, how will people get relief from this crisis?” Silva asked.
The MLA also highlighted the absence of a full-time Junior Engineer in Velim, saying this has left daily complaints unattended and routine maintenance neglected.
“There is no dedicated Junior Engineer for Velim. Complaints keep piling up, leakages are not repaired in time and residents are left helpless,” he said.
Silva further demanded the installation of sump tanks and overhead reservoirs at multiple locations in the constituency to ensure a steady and dependable water supply, especially during peak demand.
Calling for immediate action, he urged the Public Works Department and the Drinking Water Department to intervene without delay to resolve the crisis and prevent further suffering for the people of Velim.
