CHICALIM: In a bid to promote sustainable waste management across Goa’s villages, MLA Cruz Silva on Wednesday led a delegation of grassroots leaders and officials to the ‘Wealth Out of Waste’ (WOOW) treatment facility at Chicalim.
The delegation comprised Sarpanchas, Panchayat Members, the Deputy Director of Panchayats, Block Development Officer, and Panchayat Secretaries. The visit aimed to study the scientific waste treatment methods adopted by the Chicalim Village Panchayat and to explore possibilities of replicating the model in other local bodies.
Project CEO Gaurav Pokle briefed the delegation on the facility’s operational structure, detailing the processes of waste segregation, scientific treatment, and reuse. He highlighted that treated water from the plant is used to maintain the nearby Joggers Park—an example of resource recycling and sustainable urban landscaping.
Following the site tour, an interaction session was held at the Chicalim Panchayat Hall where officials and elected representatives held discussions on how similar waste management units could be introduced in their respective panchayats.
MLA Cruz Silva underlined the importance of grassroots-level action in addressing waste challenges. “The Chicalim model shows how local governance can lead the way in building clean, sustainable communities. This is the direction our villages must head toward,” he said.
The visit is expected to pave the way for collaborative efforts in rolling out decentralized waste solutions tailored to the needs of Goa’s rural areas.
