CALANGUTE: Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has reaffirmed his commitment to supporting local taxi operators, assuring that their grievances will be seriously considered in upcoming meetings with the Chief Minister and party leadership.
Lobo highlighted that taxi operators are hardworking individuals who are not seeking government jobs but want to sustain their livelihoods independently. “They deserve our support, and any policy decisions must prioritize their interests,” he said.
His remarks come after hundreds of taxi operators gathered at the Transport Department office in Panaji on Monday to submit their objections and feedback regarding the draft Goa Transport Aggregator Guidelines 2025. Introduced on May 20, these guidelines aim to regulate app-based ride-hailing services across the state.
“We will strive to make decisions that protect and benefit our local taxi owners, ensuring a fair outcome for all,” Lobo said.
While acknowledging the need for adaptation to new business models, he cautioned that changes should not undermine local operators. “The challenge is to manage these changes without causing harm. Our businesses must remain in local hands, not taken over by outsiders,” he added.
Lobo also addressed the issue of rent-a-vehicle services, noting the government has ceased issuing new rent-a-bike licenses and limited rent-a-car permits. He expressed concern over a rise in accidents linked to drunk driving, calling for government intervention to regulate the sector.
He further noted that many unemployed youths from coastal areas such as Saligao depend on the rent-a-car business and stressed the need for inclusive solutions. “We must find a way that benefits everyone involved,” he said.
Calling for unity among all stakeholders, Lobo emphasized that the party, government, and elected representatives must work together to safeguard the interests of local taxi operators.
“After years of discussion with little progress, it is time for decisive action. We must come together and chart a clear path forward,” he concluded.
