PANAJI: Benaulim MLA Capt. Venzy Viegas has launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led Goa Government, accusing it of favoring a private taxi company under a controversial subsidy scheme that he claims is hurting local taxi operators. Alleging that the move amounts to “looting” the interests of Goan taxi businesses, Viegas questioned the transparency and intent of the initiative.
The controversy arises from the government-backed program promoting the “GoaMiles” taxi service, which is offering up to 30% discounted fares and zero surge charges as part of a pre-booking campaign. While the scheme has been projected as a public-friendly initiative, Viegas described it as a “bluff,” insisting it unfairly undermines traditional taxi operators who depend on open market competition.
“Instead of supporting our local taxi businesses, the government is handing over public funds to a private company, jeopardizing the livelihoods of countless Goan families,” the MLA said. He demanded an immediate probe into the subsidy allocation and urged the government to come clean on its motives.
Viegas has further sought a detailed report on the financial implications of the scheme and its impact on the state’s taxi industry. He also announced that he would raise the issue in the upcoming Assembly session. Meanwhile, local taxi operators have extended support to Viegas’ stand, staging protests to voice their opposition to the government’s decision.
