New Delhi:
In a shocking display of political violence, a bitter rivalry between former BJP MLA Kunwar Pranav Singh Champion and Independent MLA Umesh Kumar escalated into a gunfire-filled confrontation in Uttarakhand’s Roorkee on Sunday. This incident, captured on video and widely shared on social media, has drawn severe criticism and highlighted the deep-seated animosity between the two politicians. The timing of the clash is particularly significant, occurring just days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Dehradun for the opening ceremony of the 38th national games, thereby intensifying the political tension in the region.

The violent confrontation unfolded when Champion, accompanied by his supporters, stormed Kumar’s office in Roorkee, firing several shots and hurling abuses. This aggressive move was met with a retaliatory attack by Kumar and his supporters, who fired shots at Champion’s office. The roots of this conflict date back to the 2022 Uttarakhand polls, when Kumar wrested the Khanpur seat from Champion, who had held it for four terms.
Champion alleged that Kumar had attacked his mansion in Landhaura on Saturday night and verbally abused him, prompting his reaction. In contrast, Kumar claimed that Champion had abused him and his parents on social media, leading him to retaliate. The exchange of gunfire and verbal abuses resulted in injuries, with a member of Kumar’s staff, Rao Imran, sustaining head injuries and being hospitalized.
The police swiftly intervened, arresting Champion and four of his supporters from Dehradun, while Kumar was taken into custody from Roorkee. Both politicians were detained based on complaints filed by each other. The police have also recommended the cancellation of their licensed pistols and a reconsideration of their security cover, emphasizing that no one can be allowed to take the law into their own hands.
The longstanding rivalry between Champion and Kumar has often played out on social media, with both politicians frequently engaging in verbal spats. The recent local body election results appear to have exacerbated the tension, leading to the violent confrontation. The incident has heightened security measures in the area and underscored the need for stricter control over political violence.
