New Delhi: The ongoing ICC Champions Trophy has been marked by India’s impressive undefeated run, with all their matches played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. This unique arrangement has sparked intense debate about the fairness of playing at a single venue, with some arguing it gives India an unfair edge. Mohammed Shami, India’s pace spearhead, has candidly admitted that familiarity with Dubai’s conditions has indeed been beneficial, contrasting with the views of his coach, Gautam Gambhir.
In the heart of the tournament, India’s success can be attributed to their ability to navigate the pitches effectively, thanks to their consistent presence in Dubai. Shami’s acknowledgment highlights the strategic advantage of knowing the conditions and pitch behavior intimately. This familiarity has allowed India to dominate their matches, including a crucial semifinal win over Australia.
India’s decision to play all their matches in Dubai was part of a hybrid model adopted due to political tensions that prevented them from traveling to Pakistan. Unlike other teams, which have had to shuttle between venues in Pakistan and the UAE, India has enjoyed the stability of a single location. This stability has been a significant factor in their success, as they have not had to adapt to different conditions and travel schedules.
Coach Gambhir, however, has dismissed claims of an undue advantage, emphasizing that the conditions at the ICC Academy, where they practiced, were vastly different from those at the Dubai stadium. Despite these differing views, Shami’s performance has been pivotal, making him India’s leading wicket-taker in the tournament with eight scalps from four games.
Another contentious issue Shami has addressed is the ban on using saliva to polish the ball, advocating for its reinstatement to enhance reverse swing. This ongoing debate underscores the complexities of modern cricket, where rules and conditions play a crucial role in team strategies.
