New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India hailed the India national cricket team after their dominant victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final, where they defeated the New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
India lifted the trophy in front of a packed home crowd, achieving several historic milestones. The victory marked the first time a team successfully defended the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title. It also made India the first nation to win the tournament on home soil and the first team to claim the title three times in the history of the competition.
Led by captain Suryakumar Yadav, the Indian side delivered an impressive campaign throughout the tournament. The team combined powerful batting, disciplined bowling and sharp fielding to maintain consistency and perform strongly in crucial matches.
The BCCI also praised head coach Gautam Gambhir and the support staff for their planning and preparation, which helped build a confident and balanced squad capable of delivering under pressure. The selection committee was also commended for assembling a team that blended experience with youthful energy.
BCCI president Mithun Manhas described the triumph as a proud moment for the country, noting that defending the title and winning it in front of home fans made the achievement even more special. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the success reflected a strong phase for Indian cricket, pointing to the country hosting and winning major international tournaments in recent years.
Vice president Rajeev Shukla credited the collective effort of players and support staff, highlighting the team’s composure in high pressure situations throughout the tournament.
Following the historic win, the BCCI announced a record cash reward of ₹131 crore for the team, surpassing the ₹125 crore prize given after India’s 2024 T20 World Cup victory. In addition, the International Cricket Council awarded the champions a prize of 3 million US dollars, part of a total tournament prize pool of 13.5 million dollars. The Indian team also received additional performance bonuses for each match won during the group and Super Eight stages.
