SANGUEM: A bizarre incident at the Government Higher Secondary School in Sanguem left four students injured on Friday morning after monkeys reportedly pulled down parts of the false ceiling while classes were in session.
Principal Sudesh Naik said the incident occurred around 10 a.m. when monkeys caused portions of the ceiling to collapse in the school hall. “Four students sustained minor injuries but are safe now,” he informed.
The incident comes a day after a ceiling fan fell on a girl student at a school in Sattari, raising serious concerns over the condition of school infrastructure across the state.
Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao expressed alarm over the back-to-back mishaps, stating that such incidents would create fear among students, parents, and teachers. “In June, I had cautioned the department not to play with the lives of our students, as repair works in several schools remained incomplete,” he said.
Alemao blamed the education department for rushing repair work and adopting an irresponsible approach. “This may be the result of hurried work and negligence. The department must check technical aspects in all schools to prevent such accidents,” he added.
He further alleged that corruption and commissions had seeped into the education department, “dismantling the very foundation of its system.”
