New Delhi: Widespread snowfall and rainfall across Himachal Pradesh have led to the closure of over 1,200 roads, severely affecting daily life and transport across the hill state. Despite the disruptions, tourists continue to arrive in large numbers to experience the winter scenery, even as authorities urge caution amid continuing adverse weather conditions.
The road closures have impacted several districts, cutting off remote areas and causing traffic congestion in popular tourist destinations. State authorities have deployed extensive resources to restore connectivity, with snow clearance operations underway across affected regions. Heavy machinery, including snow blowers and earth moving equipment, has been pressed into service to clear accumulated snow and reopen key routes.
While the snowfall has caused inconvenience, it has also brought relief after a prolonged dry spell. The recent precipitation is expected to benefit agriculture, particularly in higher altitudes, by improving soil moisture and supporting upcoming crops. Orchard owners and farmers are expected to gain from improved water availability, which will also help recharge natural water sources across the state.
Officials said continuous efforts are being made to assist stranded travellers and ensure coordination between district administrations, police authorities and disaster response teams. Priority is being given to reopening main roads, ensuring access to essential services and easing movement in tourist heavy areas. Thousands of machines have been deployed statewide, with provisions in place to mobilise additional resources if weather conditions worsen.
Tourism, a key pillar of Himachal Pradesh’s economy, has remained active despite the weather challenges. Authorities have welcomed visitors while stressing the importance of responsible travel. Tourists have been advised to respect local culture, traditions and religious sensitivities, while also following safety guidelines issued by the administration.
Many visitors reported facing difficulties due to traffic jams, slippery roads and limited access to basic amenities during peak snowfall. However, several tourists said they were still enjoying the snowfall and scenic beauty, even as they weighed decisions about extending their stay or returning early due to weather alerts.
With forecasts indicating the possibility of continued snowfall and rain over the next few days, authorities have urged residents and tourists to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel and strictly follow official advisories to ensure safety.
