New Delhi: India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has expressed satisfaction with the team’s preparations ahead of the highly anticipated five-match Test series against England, set to begin on June 20 in Leeds. Speaking ahead of the intra-squad four-day practice match between India ‘A’ and the senior team, scheduled from June 13, Morkel highlighted the importance of consistency and team spirit as key elements in the team’s build-up.
Reflecting on the training sessions so far, Morkel noted that the fast bowlers have enjoyed favorable conditions during the early days of the tour, which has helped boost their confidence. “The conditions have been testing for batters, which in turn is great preparation for what lies ahead,” he said in an interview with the BCCI.
However, Morkel was quick to caution that the real challenge will come when the wickets flatten out during the actual matches. “I don’t think the wickets in the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy will be as spicy as the ones we’ve seen in training. The key will be for the bowlers to show character and discipline even when conditions aren’t in their favor,” he added. “There’s been good banter between bat and ball, but we need to maintain that energy even when things don’t go our way.”
With Gautam Gambhir opting for a closed-door intra-squad match to ensure players stay focused without distractions, Morkel emphasized the need for mental discipline and process-oriented preparation. “Consistency in practice, off the field routines, and execution of basics will be vital in England. We have a diverse bowling attack with different skill sets—our job is to ensure they apply their strengths with precision.”
Despite limited red-ball cricket for the squad recently, Morkel expressed relief and optimism after watching the team train. “I was slightly nervous about the lack of red-ball preparation, but over the past few days, the way the players are moving and training is very encouraging,” he said.
Praising the overall team atmosphere, Morkel concluded, “There’s a fantastic energy in this group. For a Test series, you need confidence and unity—and this team is showing both. I’m very happy with the way we’ve started.”
