MORMUGAO: In a significant step towards infrastructure resilience, Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar kick-started landslide restoration and slope protection work along the National Highway on Tuesday morning . Emphasizing his commitment to fast-tracking the project, Amonkar declared that Mormugao is the first constituency in Goa to initiate such efforts.
The landslide, which occurred in August 2024 due to incessant monsoons, had raised concerns among commuters and residents. Addressing the media, Amonkar highlighted the proactive approach taken to address the issue.
“Despite multiple landslides across Goa, including a major one at Pernem, restoration work has not begun elsewhere. I had assured the people that we would prioritize this project, and today, I am proud to say that Mormugao is leading the way,” he stated.
Amonkar revealed that the project gained momentum following continuous follow-ups with various authorities and strong support from Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant.
The MLA further elaborated on the meticulous planning involved in the process.
“The groundwork started a month ago with multiple inspections and soil testing. We also brought in a special team from IIT Guwahati to conduct a detailed study. Based on their reports, the restoration work has now commenced,” he said.
To ensure long-term stability, a retaining wall will be constructed along the affected stretch. Amonkar assured that the work would be completed within a month, or by April-end at the latest.
The MLA also took the opportunity to hit back at critics, emphasizing that Mormugao is setting a precedent in tackling landslides.
“We faced a lot of criticism, but I want to remind our critics that we are the first in Goa to start landslide restoration work. Our commitment to public safety and infrastructure development remains unwavering,” he asserted.
