PORVORIM: The issue of acute water shortage in Mormugao constituency was raised in the Goa Assembly by MLA Sankalp Amonkar, who alleged that despite meetings held by the Water Minister, officials have failed to resolve the crisis on the ground, leaving residents to struggle for adequate water supply.
Amonkar stated that the Mormugao constituency requires around 12 million litres per day (MLD) of water but is currently receiving only 8.5 MLD, resulting in a shortfall of nearly 3.5 MLD. He said the situation is particularly severe in the Sada area, where residents are facing an acute water crisis, and demanded immediate intervention to address the problem.
Responding to the issue, Drinking Water Minister Subhash Faldesai said the assessed water requirement for Mormugao constituency is 12 MLD, while the total demand of Mormugao taluka stands at 81 MLD. He informed the House that the present supply is around 77–78 MLD, and any shortfall occurs only during breakdowns in the system.
The Minister attributed Mormugao’s recurring water problems to its high-altitude location, which affects pressure and distribution. He added that major infrastructure works are nearing completion to provide a long-term solution. “A Rs 443-crore water project, along with new pipelines and a dedicated reservoir for Mormugao, is in the final stages and is expected to be completed by April,” Faldesai said.
While assuring that the government is taking steps to stabilise supply, Amonkar maintained that immediate measures are required to ensure uninterrupted water to affected areas, stressing that residents cannot be made to wait for long-term projects as the crisis continues on a daily basis.
