New Delhi: Madhya Pradesh cabinet minister Kailash Vijayvargiya has sparked widespread outrage after making deeply insensitive remarks regarding the molestation of two Australian women cricketers in Indore. Instead of condemning the assault, the minister appeared to blame the victims, suggesting that the players should have informed local authorities or security personnel before stepping out.
The incident occurred when the two visiting cricketers were accosted by a 29-year-old local resident, Aqeel alias Naitra, who reportedly approached them on the pretext of taking a photograph. He later returned on his motorcycle and inappropriately touched the players before fleeing. The accused, who has a prior criminal record, was arrested within hours.
Addressing the matter, Vijayvargiya claimed the episode should serve as a “lesson” for players to be more cautious about their surroundings. He said that sportspersons attract attention and should always inform security before leaving their venue, citing the global popularity of athletes as justification for his comments. “Sometimes players don’t realise their fame. Such incidents remind us to be more careful,” he remarked.
When questioned about security arrangements, the minister briefly acknowledged a lapse but reiterated his belief that the players were partly at fault for not notifying anyone before going out. His remarks have drawn sharp criticism from various quarters, with many calling them regressive and victim-blaming.
The assault has once again raised concerns about women’s safety in Madhya Pradesh, a state that continues to report high rates of gender-based crimes. Critics have urged political leaders to focus on accountability and improving public safety instead of shifting blame onto victims.
The Australian players, who were in Indore for an ongoing tour, are reportedly safe but shaken by the incident, which has prompted calls for tighter security protocols for visiting teams.
