PANAJI: During the debate on the Central Excise Amendment Bill, 2025 in the Rajya Sabha, a strong emphasis was laid on ensuring that tobacco products do not become cheaper after the GST Compensation Cess ends.
The MP cautioned that affordable tobacco would increase addiction among the youth and undermine public health efforts.
He highlighted that maintaining higher tobacco prices is a proven measure to curb consumption, while the revenue generated plays a crucial role in strengthening India’s healthcare system.
This includes funding new AIIMS institutions, expanding medical colleges and supporting the Ayushman Bharat programme.
Pointing to Goa’s rising cases of cancer and lifestyle-related diseases, the MP said the measure is particularly important for the state.
He added that the Bill will help protect Goan families and contribute to more robust healthcare services.
