MARGAO: South Goa Member of Parliament Capt. Viriato Fernandes urged the student community to understand trends taking place to divide people and defeat it to protect our unity in diversity.
He was speaking after felicitating meritorious personalities from the field of education and sports by Citizens Welfare Society, Cuncolim on the occasion of national education day.
Social worker Veolla Melisa Alemao, Principal of CES College Dr. Avinash Raikar, Tilroy Fernandes and others were present.
“Our country has a unique blend with religion, culture, regions and unity in diversity. But there were attempts to divide society. Some fall to it due to lack of education. Hence, Education is very important in life,” he said.
“The concept and song ‘Sare Jahan Se Achcha’ has always inspired me. Our first Indian astronaut Rakesh Sharma was asked by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi how India looked from space, he had said ‘Sare Jahan Se Achcha’. Indeed, our country is very beautiful,” Fernandes said.
He said that Bharat Ratna Maulana Abul Kalam Azad played a vital role in the educational field.
“After independence we were not in position even to manufacture needles, it was from Britain. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru appointed Azad as education Minister, who established the first Indian Institute of Technology in 1951 and the University Grants Commission in 1953. He also laid emphasis on the development of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore,” Fernandes said, adding education is very much important for progress.
Veolla Melisa Alemao congratulated students and sportsmen for their achievements.
“It is truly commendable that educational institutions in Cuncolim are not only prioritizing academic excellence but also encouraging students and sportspersons to reach their full potential. By guiding them on the right path, these institutions are shaping the future leaders of our community,” she said.
She urged the student community to gain knowledge of everyday life and achieve goals.
“We see the destruction of the environment, forest encroachment and erosion of coastlines. These problems need to be tackled,” she said, adding knowledge of such issues can be obtained only through real life application.
