MORMUGAO: Mormugao Port Authority has received global recognition for its environmental initiatives, becoming the first port in India to offer Green Ship Incentives through the prestigious Environment Ship Index (ESI) portal. This accomplishment places the port on the international stage, acknowledged by the International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH) for promoting environmentally friendly practices among seagoing vessels.
The incentive scheme, named ‘Harit Shrey’, was launched in October 2023. The program offers discounts on port charges based on the ESI scores of commercial vessels, encouraging ships to reduce their emissions and comply with international environmental standards. Vessels with higher ESI scores benefit from greater discounts, driving the adoption of greener shipping practices.
In a significant endorsement, the Secretary General of IAPH praised Mormugao Port in August 2024 for its proactive approach to the ESI Program and for raising awareness about green shipping in the region. This recognition is especially noteworthy as Mormugao Port is one of only three ports in Asia—alongside Japan and Oman—to offer such incentives.
Since the launch of ‘Harit Shrey’, numerous vessels have benefited from the scheme, which rewards ships that emit lower levels of greenhouse gases. The initiative supports international maritime goals aimed at reducing air emissions and is part of Mormugao Port Authority’s broader strategy for sustainability in maritime operations. The port has also submitted the scheme for the IAPH Sustainability Awards, further demonstrating its leadership in environmental stewardship.
This recognition positions Mormugao Port Authority as a pioneer in sustainable shipping practices, contributing to global efforts to lower carbon emissions and improve air quality.
