Calangute: A 25-year-old youth from Mumbai died after drowning while swimming at Baga beach on Saturday evening, police said.
According to police, information was received at around 7.39 pm from the Medical Officer of PHC Candolim stating that one male person, identified as Sachin Chavhan (25), a resident of Mumbai, was brought dead as a case of drowning at Baga beach, Calangute.
During enquiry, the deceased’s childhood friend Ramkrishna Surpage (21), also a resident of Mumbai, informed police that at around 5.00 pm, he along with the deceased and another friend, Riyaz Ahmed, had gone swimming at Baga beach.
While swimming, they were caught in strong ocean currents and started drowning. Lifeguard staff rushed to their rescue and safely pulled them out of the water; however, Sachin became unconscious.
The lifeguards immediately shifted him to PHC Candolim, where the Medical Officer declared him brought dead.
Police said the body of the deceased has been preserved at the GMC mortuary, and the family has been informed to complete medico-legal formalities.
Further enquiry in the case is being conducted by PSI Yogesh Mandrekar.
