VASCO: Murgaon BJP Mandal, along with Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar and BJP South Goa President Damu Naik, gathered at Headland Sada to observe Black Day. This event marks a protest against the state of emergency declared in India on June 25, 1975, by the then Congress Government led by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Sankalp Amonkar emphasized the importance of remembering the historical events that threatened the democratic fabric of the nation. “The Emergency was a dark period in India’s history. It is crucial for us to remember and educate future generations about the consequences of undermining democratic institutions and civil liberties,” he stated.
BJP South Goa President Damu Naik reflected on the resilience shown by the people during those trying times. “The resilience of our citizens and their unwavering spirit during the Emergency period is commendable. Observing Black Day serves as a reminder of our duty to uphold democratic values and protect the rights of every individual,” Naik remarked.
Members of the Murgaon BJP Mandal reiterated the significance of this observance. “By marking this day, we honor the sacrifices made by countless individuals who stood up against tyranny and fought for the restoration of democracy,” one member shared.
The protest was marked by speeches, the reading of historical accounts, and a pledge to safeguard democratic principles. The gathering called for a unified effort to ensure that such a period never repeats itself in India’s future.
In concluding the event, Amonkar urged, “Let us take this moment to commit ourselves to the values of freedom, justice, and equality. The lessons from the Emergency must guide our actions as we strive for a stronger and more vibrant democracy.”
The observance at Headland Sada stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of democracy and the collective memory of a nation determined to preserve its democratic ethos.
