New Delhi: A new development has emerged in the investigation into the November 10 Delhi car blast, with accused Muzammil Ahmad Ganaie informing investigators that co-accused Dr Shaheen Shahid is his legally wedded wife. He asserted that they were married in September 2023 at a mosque near Al Falah University, where a mehr of approximately ₹5,000 to ₹6,000 was agreed upon under Sharia law. This disclosure is now being examined to understand Shaheen’s alleged financial involvement in the activities of the module.
The National Investigation Agency has made its seventh arrest in the case, taking into custody Soyab from Dhouj in Faridabad. He is suspected of sheltering bomber Umar Un Nabi and providing logistical support shortly before the attack.
Investigators are working to determine whether Shaheen’s marital connection with Muzammil explains the substantial funds she reportedly transferred to the group. She is suspected to have provided around ₹6.5 lakh to Muzammil in 2023 for the procurement of weapons. In 2024, she allegedly gave Umar ₹3 lakh for the purchase of a Ford EcoSport, which was later used in the blast attempt.
Overall, agencies believe Shaheen may have contributed nearly ₹27 to ₹28 lakh towards the purchase of weapons and explosives. During questioning, she is learned to have stated that the money was intended as zakat rather than for any unlawful activities.
The NIA continues to track multiple leads across states as it works to identify all individuals involved. Investigators are also looking into links with terror-associated networks in south Kashmir, where modules operating since 2016 in Baramulla, Srinagar, Anantnag and Ganderbal are suspected of supplying weapons under the direction of handlers based in Pakistan.
These networks are believed to have played a key role in providing the assault weapons used by Muzammil and Umar, forming a critical part of the wider conspiracy behind the attack.
