New Delhi: India’s top ranked singles player Sumit Nagal made a confident start at the Delhi Open, securing a straight sets victory over Spain’s David Jorda Sanchis in the opening round. Ranked 297 in the world, Nagal produced a composed 6-3, 7-5 win in one hour and 27 minutes to progress to the second round.
Nagal broke serve in the opening game and maintained control to claim the first set comfortably. The second set proved tighter, with both players holding serve until Nagal delivered a decisive break in the 11th game before serving out the match.
The tournament’s biggest surprise came when Kazakhstan’s Beibit Zhukayev stunned top seed Dane Sweeny. Zhukayev rallied from a set down to win 6-7(6), 6-2, 6-2, knocking out the world No. 134 in the first round. Sweeny had arrived in strong form after a solid start to the 2026 season, including a promising run at the Australian Open and a Challenger title in Brisbane.
Elsewhere, second seed Rei Sakamoto advanced with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 victory over Frederico Ferreira Silva, while third seed Jay Clarke edged past Maks Kasnikowski 7-6, 6-4.
At the KPB Trust ITF Women’s Open W100 Bengaluru, India’s Sahaja Yamalapalli displayed resilience in a three set win over Korea’s Dayeon Back. After taking the first set 6-2, Yamalapalli dropped the second but regained control in the decider to seal a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 triumph.
In doubles, Ankita Raina and Indonesia’s Priska Madelyn Nugroho secured a convincing 6-4, 6-1 win. Other notable results included victories for Vaishnavi Adkar, Mai Hontama and Erika Andreeva in singles, while several Indian pairs progressed in the doubles draw.
