PANAJI: Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has said that justice for the 25 people who lost their lives in the Arpora fire tragedy must be ensured, stressing that responsibility must be fixed and that the case is being closely observed across the country.
Commenting on the incident, Lobo said he is awaiting the outcome of the magisterial inquiry, calling it a key step in identifying those accountable and preventing similar disasters in the future. He warned that any delays or shortcomings in the process would only weaken public trust in the system.
Raising concerns about public safety, the MLA urged stricter oversight of indoor soundproof nightclubs. He said licences should be issued only after thorough fire safety checks by the relevant departments, adding that entertainment venues cannot be allowed to operate at the cost of human lives.
Lobo further said the Arpora fire tragedy highlights serious gaps in the enforcement of fire safety norms. He called on authorities to adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards violations and ensure that safety regulations are implemented in both letter and spirit.
He reiterated that while justice for the victims and their families is essential, preventing such tragedies in the future must remain an equally important priority.
