PANAJI: In a first 25 athletes have failed dope test conducted during the national games organised in Goa this year from 25th October to 9th November. A top source in the know of developments told India Today that as many as 25 athletes test reports have come positive and all are provisionally suspended . There are few national winners and international players on the list of dope failures.
The athletes, hailing from various disciplines including weightlifting, athletics, wrestling, cycling, judo, football, wushu, and lawn bowls, tested positive for banned substances such as metenolone, methandienone, stanozolol, and other anabolic steroids. These findings have cast a shadow over the event, which was intended to showcase the country’s sporting talents.
Amongst those implicated were seven medalists, whose achievements are now tarnished by the scandal. The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) has charged all but two of the athletes with doping violations, leading to mandatory provisional suspensions. The implicated athletes face bans ranging from two to four years, pending the outcomes of their hearings before the Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel (ADDP).
This incident underscores the persistent challenge of doping in sports and the need for rigorous testing and education to uphold the spirit of fair competition. It also highlights the vigilance of bodies like NADA and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in their ongoing battle against the use of performance-enhancing drugs in sports.
