The National Sports Governance Bill has become an Act after President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the landmark legislation that promises to revamp India’s sports administration.
New Delhi: The National Sports Governance Bill has officially become law after President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the landmark legislation aimed at overhauling India’s sports administration.
A Gazette notification issued by the central government confirmed that the Act received Presidential assent on August 18, 2025. “The following Act of Parliament received the assent of the President on the 18th August, 2025 and is hereby published for general information The National Sports Governance Act, 2025,” it stated.
The legislation, pending for over a decade, was finalised after year-long consultations with key stakeholders. It was introduced in the Lok Sabha on July 23, passed in the Lower House on August 11, and cleared by the Rajya Sabha the next day after an extensive two-hour debate.
The new law establishes clear governance criteria for sports bodies and introduces two key institutions a National Sports Tribunal for swift dispute resolution and a National Sports Election Panel to oversee elections of National Sports Federations (NSFs), often plagued by controversies.
The Act is being hailed as a major reform in Indian sports, promising greater transparency, accountability, and professionalism in its administration.
