SANKHALI: The Department of Zoology, Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Sankhalim in collaboration with Goa Shipyard Ltd. Vasco under CSR Initiative organized a National Seminar on Zoonotic Diseases and One Health Approach recently.
The members present on the dais for the inaugural were Prof. Dr. Namdev Gawas-Principal, Dr. Vedpal Tari- Chief Medical Officer, Goa Shipyard Ltd, Vasco, Mrs Preethi Pednekar- Head, Department of Zoology and Seminar Coordinator Dr. Suman Tari. The Seminar was inaugurated by watering a potted plant in the college campus.
The second session was on Emerging zoonotic and vector borne diseases threatening India in challenging climate by Dr. Rajendra Kanekar, State Epidemiologist- Integrated Disease Surveillance Project, Directorate of Health Services, Panaji.
He gave an update on zoonotic diseases cases in Goa and how to prevent them by taking precautions like vaccinating pets etc. He also raised concerns about the recent outbreak of HPMV outbreak in China and its status in Goa.
Post lunch included two sessions. The first session was on Wildlife Research and safety against zoonoses by Dr. Sandesh Gawas, Assistant Professor in Zoology, Government College, Quepem.
He elaborated on the importance of safety equipment while undertaking wildlife research and while on field work to protect oneself from zoonotic diseases especially those arising from tick bites.
The seminar concluded with a session on the economic and trade impacts of zoonotic diseases by Professor Seema Rath, Professor, Department of Economics. Government College, Sankhalim.
She gave statistical figures on how emergence of zoonotic diseases has affected the trade and economy of the countries across the globe.
The seminar was attended by 41 faculty and student members from colleges all over Goa. Certificates were awarded to all the participants at the end of the seminar.
