PANAJI: In the thrilling quarterfinals of the United Trophy, Navelim Villagers Union edged past United Club Verna in a nail-biting tiebreaker, securing their semifinal spot with a 6-5 victory at the Rosary Church ground, Navelim. This captivating match showcased the resilience and skill of both teams, leading to an intense climax as they battled for supremacy.
The match kicked off with significant momentum building early, as Nash Pereira of Navelim Villagers Union marked his presence with a stunning header in the 28th minute. This early strike seemed to set the tone for a dominant performance, but United Club Verna fought back determinedly. In the 59th minute, Desmond Pereira equalized for Verna, restoring parity and pushing the match into a 1-1 draw at full time.
The tiebreaker became the deciding factor, with both teams displaying remarkable skill and composure under pressure. Verna’s efforts were highlighted by successful penalties from Clive Fernandes, Fulzacio Cardozo, Desmon Gama, and Josley Moniz. However, it was Navelim who ultimately prevailed, thanks to the precision of Ronaldo Pereira, Meliston Dias, Aden Pereira, Vento Costa, and Velington Almeida, who all scored crucial penalties.
