PORVORIM/PANAJI: Just days after social activist Rama Kankonkar was assaulted in Panaji, another activist, Swapnesh Sherlekar, has alleged receiving a threat call from BJP leader Mahanand Asnodkar, escalating political tensions in the State.
An audio clip of Asnodkar purportedly warning Sherlekar has gone viral, drawing widespread attention. Sherlekar, who recently courted controversy with a video urging the government to support the proposed Tiger Reserve in Goa, claimed that Asnodkar threatened him over the remarks.
Sherlekar filed a police complaint at Porvorim Police Station, stating he would not apologise. “My intention was only to convey to the government that if they respect the Tiger as the vahan of the Goddess, they should support the Tiger Reserve proposal,” he said.
Following the complaint, Porvorim Police registered a non-cognizable offence (NC) against Asnodkar under Section 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for an act of intentional insult. Further proceedings are underway.
Responding to the allegations, Asnodkar admitted to calling Sherlekar but maintained that he was personally offended by the video, which he said insulted Hindu sentiments.
