MAPUSA: The deteriorating condition of roads in Angod reflects a wider problem, with several internal roads within the Mapusa municipal market complex also falling into disrepair, causing daily inconvenience to traders and shoppers.
Road surfaces across the busy market area have worsened significantly, hampering movement and affecting commercial activity. The situation traces back to underground cabling works carried out nearly two years ago. Although the dug-up stretches were later refilled, the restoration was poorly executed. As a result, the arrival of the monsoon led to the loose filling collapsing, leaving behind potholes, sunken sections and uneven surfaces at multiple points in and around the market.
Visitors to the market have voiced strong criticism of the Mapusa Municipal Council, accusing it of failing to carry out timely maintenance. Many said the damaged roads have made it difficult to access shops, with elderly citizens facing the greatest hardship.
There have been reports of senior shoppers losing their balance and falling due to the uneven road surface, in some cases sustaining injuries.
With no response from the civic authorities, several shopkeepers said they were left with no choice but to contribute money collectively to repair parts of the internal roads themselves.
“The state of the roads is extremely bad. When repeated complaints brought no action, traders had to take matters into their own hands,” a shopkeeper said.
