PANAJI: Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar today called for Goa University to adopt a clear, long-term vision rooted in local values, research, and public engagement, while speaking at the university’s 41st Foundation Day celebrations.
Emphasizing the importance of aligning education with India’s cultural context, Arlekar said, “Our education system keeps us rooted to our soil. The New Education Policy 2020 is the first serious attempt to decolonize our education.”
He stressed that research must remain central to any higher education institution’s mission. “Where there is no research, it cannot be called a university,” he remarked, urging Goa University to strengthen its focus on research and innovation.
Arlekar also encouraged the university leadership to involve students and the wider public in shaping its academic priorities. “Get to the students, get to the public to decide what is best needed for the university,” he advised.
Calling for strategic planning, he proposed that the university develop a comprehensive Master Plan to guide its future growth and development.
The event saw participation from faculty members, students, and dignitaries, who reflected on Goa University’s four decades of contribution to higher education in the state.
