Panaji: The Goa government has initiated the process to upgrade existing fishing jetties to enhance berthing and landing facilities across the state, according to Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar in response to a Legislative Assembly question by Margao MLA Digambar Kamat.
The Minister informed that the existing jetties are being upgraded instead of constructing entirely new ones. The Department of Fisheries has appointed Water and Power Consultancy Service (WAPCOS) as the Project Executing Agency (PEA) for implementing these projects, both under the centrally funded Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and through state funding.
A tender has been floated for the repair and renovation of the Chapora Fishing Jetty and Auction Hall on July 8, 2025. Similarly, the Malim Jetty is being taken up for construction and upgradation with a project cost of ₹9.93 crore. The contract was awarded to M/s. Ki Bagkiya Constructions Pvt. Ltd. and work commenced on July 13, 2025, with completion targeted for July 2026.
The Khariwada Jetty is also undergoing repair and maintenance under a tender floated by WAPCOS on July 8, 2025. Meanwhile, the Cortalim Jetty, along with fish landing centres at Talpona and Cutbona, has been included in a proposal submitted to the Union Ministry of Fisheries for funding under the PMMSY. Approval is awaited.
As per PMMSY guidelines, the construction or modernization of jetties requires state governments to undertake site selection, socio-economic surveys, environmental clearance, and post-construction operation and maintenance commitments.
These infrastructure upgrades aim to bolster Goa’s marine fisheries sector, improve livelihoods of local fishermen, and increase efficiency in fish handling and transport.
