CANACONA: A long-pending demand of the villagers of Borimol and Talem in Gaondongrim was fulfilled with the inauguration of a new footbridge over the Bhandara at Borimol on Wednesday.
The ₹5 lakh project was inaugurated by Goa Legislative Assembly Speaker and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar, in the presence of Satoli ward panch Sarita Gaonkar, Nanem panch and Canacona BJP Mandal president Prabhakar Gaonkar, WRD officials, and a large number of villagers.
“This demand goes back 40–50 years. I remember people raising it even during the time of Vasu Paiek Gaonkar. Sadly, a schoolgirl once lost her life while crossing this river. Though small in scale, this bridge is of great importance to the daily life of the villagers,” Tawadkar stated.
The footbridge now connects Borimol and Talem, significantly reducing the travel distance from 5 km to just 0.5 km, especially benefiting children going to Anganwadis and primary schools, and locals engaged in paddy farming, cashew cultivation, and other rural activities.
After the inauguration, officials and villagers took the first walk across the bridge, marking a symbolic and practical milestone for the remote region.
