PANAJI: Goa is set to strengthen its mental healthcare workforce with the introduction of two new academic programmes at the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour (IPHB) from the 2026-27 academic year.

Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said building the next generation of mental health professionals is essential to meet the growing demand for specialised care. He noted that since 2019, the M.Phil in Psychiatric Social Work programme at IPHB has successfully trained 30 students, contributing to the state’s expanding mental health workforce.
“Building the next generation of mental health professionals is essential. The M.Phil in Psychiatric Social Work programme at IPHB has already trained 30 students since 2019, strengthening our mental healthcare services. From 2026-27, the introduction of Bachelor in Medical and Psychiatric Social Work and Master in Psychiatric Social Work programmes will further enhance mental health education in Goa and prepare the future of mental healthcare,” Rane said.
The new courses — Bachelor in Medical and Psychiatric Social Work and Master in Psychiatric Social Work — aim to expand training opportunities and improve availability of qualified professionals in mental health services across the state.
