MAPUSA: On Monday, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant laid the foundation for the new bridge across Tar River.
The chief minister in his speech, said that the bridge, constructed by Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) at the cost of Rs 10 cr would be completed within 4 months.
“The bridge would be completed before monsoons, and the people’s co-operation is important for the completion,” Sawant said.
He said that with proper beautification and care, the Mapusa riverside can be turned into an important Tourist spot and a place for the locals to enjoy the surrounding environment.
“Through Sustainable planning, the Govt. will strive to beautify more such environment-laced locations all across the State,” he said.
A four-lane bridge of 30-metre span is expected to be built across the Tar River, which includes channelization, protective measures, illumination and construction of traffic islands on both sides of the bridge.
As per the plans, the existing single-lane bridge will be demolished, and a new four-lane bridge will come up in its place at an estimated cost of Rs 9 crore.
“We have drawn up the plans to construct the new Tar Bridge. The tender for the project will be issued within the next 15 days. The bridge will be constructed within five to six months,” said a GSIDC official.
The earlier plan of demolishing a couple of kiosks for the new bridge has been shelved.
“As per the new plans, the bridge will be constructed in such a way that no structures will have to be demolished,” he said.
He said one of the two-lane bridges will be constructed first, and only then the present single-lane bridge will be demolished and work on the other two-lane bridge will be taken up in its place.
