New Delhi: As the cricket world gears up for the Champions Trophy 2025 final, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner has sent a clear message to India: the Kiwis are ready to repeat their past successes against them. This comes after New Zealand convincingly defeated South Africa by 50 runs in the second semifinal in Lahore, securing their spot in the final against India on Sunday, March 9, in Dubai.
The upcoming match is not just a title clash but also a chance for New Zealand to avenge their recent Group A loss to India. Despite that defeat, Santner believes his team’s performance in Dubai, where they managed to put India under pressure, has given them the confidence they need for the final showdown.
In the semifinal against South Africa, New Zealand showcased their all-round strength, with Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson scoring centuries and Mitchell Santner leading a dominant bowling display. This victory sets up a thrilling final against India, marking New Zealand’s fourth appearance in the Champions Trophy final in nine editions.
However, the Kiwis face a challenge with fast bowler Matt Henry’s fitness uncertain due to a shoulder injury sustained during the semifinal. Henry has been a key player for New Zealand, picking up 10 wickets in the tournament so far.
Santner’s optimism is rooted in New Zealand’s past victories against India, including their last major tournament final in the 2021 ICC World Test Championship. As the teams prepare for the final, India will need to counter New Zealand’s spin depth, seam movement, and exceptional fielding to emerge victorious.
