MARGAO: A review meeting in compliance with National Green Tribunal (NGT) directives was chaired by Additional Collector-II, South Goa and Head of Kushavati District, Ramesh Gaonkar, in the presence of Deputy Collector, South-II and Head of Kushavati District, Prajeet Chodankar, to evaluate the status and challenges of solid waste management in Panchayat and Municipal areas.
Officials from various departments including BDOs, Municipal Councils, Health Department, Public Works Department (PWD) and Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) attended the meeting.
The meeting reviewed waste management infrastructure such as garbage sites and Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs). While some facilities are operational, gaps remain in achieving full door-to-door waste collection across Panchayats. Urban Local Bodies reported progress, but consistency and coverage require improvement. Emphasis was laid on better segregation, collection and processing of waste.
Key issues discussed included challenges at the Sonsodo site, waste blackspots and illegal scrapyards. Officials were directed to strengthen monitoring, enforcement and inter-departmental coordination.
Departments were also instructed to prepare actionable plans and ensure improved coordination for effective solid waste management.f
