PANAJI: Admitting the application of Goa Foundation, the NGT has agreed that the Vedanta’s beneficiation plants at Codli required EC for its operation
In its judgement, the NGT agreed with the GF that an EC was required for operation of the Codli plant, and directed the MOEF&CC and the Goa Pollution Control Board to act accordingly.
The plant shut its operations the same day.
The GF application pleaded that the commencement of the two beneficiation plants at Codli after the closure of mining on 15.3.2018 and after the cancellation of all environment clearances was illegal as Vedanta did not have ECs for them.
Despite not having an EC and knowing full well that the plants needed an EC, the Pollution Board issued a consent to operate.
The application challenged the operation of the plants without ECs, and prayed for a direction to the Board to revoke its consent as it enabled the company to operate in violation of environment norms.
Today, the Goa Foundation wrote to the Board asking for similar action to be taken against two other beneficiation plants of Vedanta at Surla and Amone, both operating in similar conditions without EC.
The complaint also included the beneficiation plant of Fomento at Cuddegal.
