New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has petitioned a Delhi court for the extended custody of Tahawwur Rana, a Pakistani-born Canadian businessman accused of involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. The agency asserts that Rana’s interrogation could provide critical insights into Lashkar-e-Taiba’s future operations and Hafiz Saeed’s role in orchestrating attacks against India.
Rana, 64, was extradited from the United States to India earlier this month following the U.S. Supreme Court’s rejection of his appeal against the extradition. The NIA contends that Rana’s non-cooperation and his extensive international connections make his continued custody essential for a thorough investigation. The court has authorized the NIA to record Rana’s voice and obtain handwriting samples to compare with recovered documents and intercepts linked to the 26/11 attacks.
Tahawwur Rana is charged with criminal conspiracy, waging war against the government of India, murder, and forgery under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. He is accused of providing logistical support to the attackers and has been implicated in intercepted communications suggesting a desire to reward the perpetrators.
The NIA’s efforts to secure Rana’s extended custody underscore India’s commitment to bringing justice to the victims of the 26/11 attacks and dismantling terrorist networks operating against the nation.
