PANAJI: A study of a section of Candolim Beach by the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) has been recommended by the Bombay High Court in Goa in response to claims that the Beach Club and Resort’s construction has harmed the environment.
Following the site inspection, the Bench of Justices M. S. Karnik and Valmiki Menezes have requested that a report be submitted in three weeks with recommendations for restoring the sandy areas. This ruling was made in the course of a public interest litigation hearing.
“We deem it appropriate to request the Director, National Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula to depute any Scientific Officer from the Institute, familiar with the process of accelerating the sand accretion over the sandy stretches of Survey No.146/4-E of Village Candolim, the land which is the subject matter of this petition,” the order reads, taking into consideration the petitioners’ suggestions that there is now a better scientific method of accelerating the sand accretion process, as suggested by NIO in the aforementioned paper.
The Bench has also requested that the NIO Director send a report with recommendations for the area’s restoration, as well as notify the HC Registrar of the inspection’s date and time.
The petitioner states that 2,190 square meters of land were purchased by Zon Hotels Pvt Ltd in order to build the building. The company was hit with a fine of approximately Rs 2.04 crore by the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA), which was upheld by the National Green Tribunal. The company then challenged the decision.
