PANJIM: As the Covid cases in the state are on the rise, the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) on Thursday has decided not to allow the annual fair of Gokul Ashtami in the city.
The decision not to hold the annual fair has been taken as a precaution to stop the spread of the Corona Virus.
Addressing the media, CCP Mayor Uday Madkaikar said, “this year Gokul Ashtami fair will not be allowed in the city. The decision has been taken in view of COVID pandemic.”
The fair, held along the promenade opposite City municipal market, has been a major attraction as people throng to buy various items for the festival season.
The ten-day long annual fair, on an average use to have 200 stalls including those selling furniture, traditional kitchen items, wooden items, clothes, etc.
Also, the Corporation has in-principle decided not to allow Ganesh festival immersions on a large scale. “We appeal people to make it a low-key affair. Police force would be deployed at immersion points to ensure that only two-three members per Ganesh idol is allowed at the site,” he said.
Mayor has also appealed to people not to hold Ganesh procession, which is held otherwise during the immersion time.
Also, Sarawjanik Ganesh mandals, may celebrate the festival with small idols instead of traditional big ones.
