New Delhi: Om Birla rejected allegations that the Leader of the Opposition was not allowed to speak in the Lok Sabha, asserting that his actions as Speaker were impartial and that adequate time had been provided to both the government and the opposition during parliamentary proceedings.
His remarks came after a resolution seeking his removal as Speaker was defeated through a voice vote in the House following a tense debate. Responding to criticism raised during the discussion, Birla expressed gratitude to members who supported him as well as those who raised concerns about the functioning of the Chair.
He acknowledged that members had voiced issues related to transparency and parliamentary conduct, saying he welcomed constructive criticism regarding his responsibilities as Speaker.
Addressing concerns over the suspension of opposition members, Birla stated that he always tries to avoid taking such action. However, he noted that suspensions sometimes become necessary when parliamentary rules are violated. Maintaining order and discipline in the House, he said, is an essential part of the Speaker’s duty.
Birla added that such decisions are never taken lightly and that it is painful for him to suspend members. At the same time, he urged lawmakers to reflect on the circumstances that lead to such situations during parliamentary proceedings.
Responding to claims that microphones of opposition members were deliberately switched off, Birla clarified that the Chair does not control the microphone system in the House. He explained that members are allowed to speak only when their turn comes in accordance with established parliamentary rules.
The Speaker also referred to protests by opposition women MPs who moved toward the treasury benches holding placards during the session. He said his actions were aimed at protecting the dignity and decorum of Parliament.
Birla further emphasised that any photographs, printed material, documents or quotations intended to be presented in the House must receive the Speaker’s approval beforehand. According to him, failure to follow this procedure created situations that required firm intervention from the Chair.
Reaffirming his commitment to parliamentary values, Birla said he would continue working to uphold the constitutional dignity and orderly functioning of Parliament.
