New Delhi: As India prepares to kick off its five-match Test series against England in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship cycle, English batter Jos Buttler has heaped high praise on Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, calling him the biggest star in the touring squad and a unique challenge for any batter.
Speaking to former England pacer Stuart Broad on the For the Love of Cricket podcast, Buttler didn’t hold back his admiration for Bumrah, whose distinctive bowling style, awkward angles, and pinpoint accuracy make him a formidable opponent in any format—especially in red-ball cricket.
“I don’t think there’s a bigger star in that touring squad than Jasprit Bumrah,” Buttler said.
Having faced Bumrah on several occasions in international cricket and the IPL, Buttler acknowledged that the right-arm pacer’s unorthodox action and run-up make facing him particularly uncomfortable—especially for right-handed batters like himself.
“He creates awkward angles, the run-up is unique, the action is unique. He delivers the ball from about a foot or more closer to the batsman than usual, so it feels quicker than it actually is,” he explained.
Buttler further elaborated on how Bumrah’s deceptive deliveries and movement make it tough to predict the ball’s path.
“As a right-hander, it always feels like the ball is coming in. But he can beat you on the outside as well, so you end up squared up—a sitting target,” he said.
The England vice-captain stressed that handling Bumrah will be crucial if England is to fare well in the high-stakes Test series. With Bumrah expected to play three of the five Tests to manage his workload, Buttler said England’s batters will need to bring their A-game.
“He’s a superstar bowler, and that’s what you expect at this level. To beat India, England will have to play him really well,” Buttler added.
The 31-year-old Bumrah, currently ranked among the top bowlers in the world, has a stellar Test record in English conditions, having taken 37 wickets in just 9 matches at an average of 26.27. His ability to adapt to swing-friendly conditions, coupled with his unique skill set, makes him a serious threat to the home side.
Former England fast bowler Stuart Broad also acknowledged Bumrah’s prowess, pointing out the danger he poses across a full five-Test series.
“He’s going to be someone to watch. If he plays all five Tests, he’s going to pick up a shedload of wickets, isn’t he?” Broad remarked.
The much-anticipated Test series, beginning this Friday, marks the start of both teams’ campaigns in the 2023-2025 ICC World Test Championship. India will look to bounce back from past disappointments in England and make a strong statement under testing conditions.
Bumrah’s performance will likely play a pivotal role in India’s success, especially against a confident England side that has found momentum under the aggressive leadership of Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum.
As excitement builds for this high-octane series, one thing is clear: Jasprit Bumrah will be the bowler to watch—and the man England fears the most.
