PANAJI: In the bustling streets of Panaji, a recent wave of misinformation has sparked concern among residents regarding the ongoing Smart City project at Taad Maad, St. Inez. As construction continues on a 250-meter sewage line and manhole, Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Ltd. (IPSCDL) has stepped forward to address these concerns, emphasizing that no harm has been done to the nearby shrine or the iconic banyan tree.
IPSCDL’s clarification comes in response to reports suggesting damage to the temple structure and the tree due to the project. The company assures that comprehensive shoring work has been implemented to safeguard both the shrine and the tree, ensuring their stability and safety.
A portion of the retaining gutter wall did loosen during excavation, but this was not a collapse as some reports claimed. The gutter walls are distinct from retaining walls, and some sections were dismantled to facilitate shoring work around an existing live gas line. IPSCDL’s team has assessed the site and is taking necessary measures to reinforce and restore stability, particularly due to soil settlement from the deep excavation required for the project.
Additionally, a minor leak developed in the live water pipeline due to soil settlement, which has been addressed by shutting down the line. This affected water supply to three government quarters and a garage, but not the entire St. Inez zone as initially reported. Water is being supplied via tankers, and an alternate line is expected to be connected by the end of the day.
Work on the project ceases at 5:30 PM to ensure worker safety, and IPSCDL emphasizes that this is not an abandonment of the project. The work is closely monitored by engineers and is subject to a Writ Petition, underscoring the company’s commitment to its progress.
IPSCDL appeals for support and understanding from the community, urging against the spread of misinformation that can create fear and impact the morale of the workers involved.
