PANAJI: In a major development, the State government has decided not to confer the prestigious Dilip Sardesai sports Excellence award 2023-24 as the applicants were found to be non medal winners.
The Selection Committee meeting of Dilip Sardesai Sports Excellence Award was held under the chairmanship of Secretary Sports, Government of Goa on 22nd August 2023 at Athletic Stadium Bambolim at 3.30 pm.

The Secretary (Sports) made an observation on the overall participation of the players at the International Level and mentioned that since the stature of the award is high, the Award should be given to the players having Medal performance and of not mere participation.
Other Committee members also agreed with the suggestion made by the secretary sports and were of the view that non of the four Applicants qualified to be conferred The Dilip Sardesai Sports Excellence Award for the year 2023-24.
In view of above this is to inform you that the Government has decided not to confer the Dilip Sardesai Sports Excellence Award for the year 2023-2024, the function scheduled to be held on 29th August 2023 is therefore cancelled.
The said award was instituted in the year 2008 and since then eight highest achievers amongst outstanding sportspersons have been presented with the said State Award.
The Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Goa, instituted the Dilip Sardesai Sports Excellence Award in 2009, which is given on the occasion of National Sports Day (29 August) each year.
The award consists of a bronze plaque of Sardesai, a citation and a purse of ₹200,000. It is presented to achievers among Goan sportspersons who represented India at any international-level sports competition during the preceding year
