
PANJIM: In a first, 8 beaches of India have been recommended for the coveted ‘Blue Flag’ International eco-label by an independent national jury composed of eminent environmentalists & scientists. However, Goa’s Miramar Beach has failed to make it to the top eight.
Blue Flag beaches are considered the cleanest beaches of the world.
The eight beaches are Shivrajpur in Gujarat, Ghoghla in Daman And Diu, Kasarkod and Padubidri beach in Karnataka, Kappad in Kerala, Rushikonda in Andhra Pradesh, Golden beach of Odisha and Radhanagar beach in Andaman and Nicobar.
The Union Environment Ministry had selected 12 beaches in India to vie for a ‘Blue Flag’ certification, an international recognition conferred on beaches that meet certain criteria of cleanliness and environmental propriety.
These 12 beaches were at Shivrajpur (Gujarat), Bhogave (Maharashtra), Ghoghla (Diu), Miramar (Goa), Kasarkod and Padubidri (Karnataka), Kappad (Kerala), Eden (Puducherry), Mahabalipuram (Tamil Nadu), Rushikonda (Andhra Pradesh), Golden (Odisha), and Radhanagar (Andaman & Nicobar Islands).
