New Delhi: Indian Railways has revised its ticket cancellation and refund rules, introducing stricter timelines that could significantly affect passengers who cancel their bookings close to departure time. The updated policy is designed to discourage last minute cancellations and improve seat utilisation across the railway network.
One of the most notable changes is the introduction of an eight hour cut off rule for confirmed tickets. Under the revised system, passengers will not receive any refund if a confirmed ticket is cancelled within eight hours of the train’s scheduled departure. Previously, travellers were eligible for a partial refund even if the cancellation was made close to departure time.
The new structure also modifies cancellation charges depending on how early a ticket is cancelled. If a confirmed ticket is cancelled 48 hours or more before departure, standard cancellation charges based on travel class will apply. For cancellations made between 48 hours and 12 hours before departure, a higher percentage of the fare will be deducted.
If a ticket is cancelled between 12 hours and eight hours before departure, the penalty becomes even steeper. However, once the eight hour window is crossed, passengers will lose the entire ticket amount.
Rules for Tatkal bookings remain largely unchanged and continue to be stricter than regular reservations. Confirmed Tatkal tickets are generally non refundable unless specific conditions occur, such as train cancellation, significant delays or technical issues like air conditioning failure in certain classes.
For passengers holding waitlisted e tickets, the system will automatically cancel the booking if the ticket is not confirmed before departure, with a minimal deduction applied to the refund. RAC tickets will continue to allow partial travel with refund provisions as per existing guidelines.
The revised policy is intended to encourage travellers to finalise their plans earlier and reduce last minute cancellations, allowing waitlisted passengers a better chance of securing confirmed seats while improving overall booking efficiency.
