Panaji: Despite growing concerns over frequent road mishaps in Goa, Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho has informed the Legislative Assembly that there has been no increase in the number of road accidents in the State between 2022 and mid-2025.
Responding to Unstarred LAQ No. 034 tabled by MLA Carlos Ferreira, the Minister revealed that Goa recorded 1,809 road accidents between 2022 and June 2025. A year-wise breakdown shows 538 accidents in 2022, 510 in 2023, 504 in 2024, and 257 incidents reported in the first half of 2025.
To address accident-prone areas, the government has identified several black spots and accident-prone zones over the past three years, with details furnished in Annexure A. The Public Works Department (PWD) has undertaken temporary safety measures at all such locations, with permanent rectifications scheduled to be completed by May 2026.
The Transport Minister also stated that District Road Safety Committees have been set up in both North and South Goa under the respective District Magistrates. These committees conduct regular reviews of accident data, road engineering measures, and public awareness campaigns as per directions issued by the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety on March 29, 2022.
Furthermore, a road safety audit for village and MDR roads in North Goa has been completed, while the audit for South Goa is in progress. The relevant PWD divisions are in the process of submitting proposals for sanction and execution of improvement works.
On the question of seeking a separate safety audit by the Union Ministry for Road Transport and Highways, the State Government clarified that no additional audit is needed for completed four-lane National Highway projects, as these already underwent mandatory safety audits before being opened to traffic.
