Ponda: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has assured that traditional Goan vendors will not be subjected to sopo (market fee) collections during the Ganesh Chaturthi season. He clarified that the official notification was delayed only because of the weekend.
Despite the CM’s assurance, matoli sellers at Ponda market complained that sopo is still being collected from them, adding to their financial burden ahead of the festival. Vendors expressed frustration over the continued practice and demanded immediate relief.
Local authorities are yet to provide clarity on the enforcement of the CM’s directive, leading to growing pressure from traders and residents for urgent intervention. Stakeholders have stressed the need for timely action to protect traditional livelihoods and ensure a smooth and festive atmosphere in the run-up to Ganesh Chaturthi.
