Kolkata: A horrifying account of fear and unchecked intimidation has emerged from a law college in Kolkata, where Monojit ‘Mango’ Mishra—the main accused in the recent rape of a 24-year-old student—allegedly operated with impunity for years. Students have described a hostile campus environment where Mishra, an alumnus who returned as a contractual employee, harassed female students, manipulated their photos, and openly intimidated both peers and staff.
“There was a climate of fear. Nobody wanted to attend classes if they thought they might run into him,” said one student anonymously. “He used to secretly take photos of girls, morph them, and circulate them in WhatsApp groups. He also groped and harassed many. Everyone was scared.”
Despite multiple complaints spanning years—including incidents of sexual assault, violence against security staff, theft, and property damage—Mishra reportedly continued to roam freely due to alleged political backing. In 2019, he was accused of sexually assaulting a female student and tearing her clothes. In 2024, he allegedly beat a guard and vandalized college property. Several FIRs were filed, yet no significant action was taken.
“He was so politically connected that nobody dared to stop him. He claimed closeness with powerful leaders, and even the teachers seemed to fear him,” the student added.
Tragically, his conduct was so widely known that many students now say they believe most female students were targeted at some point. Even his family reportedly distanced themselves—his father is a temple priest and his mother is said to be suffering from health issues, and both allegedly cut ties with him due to his behavior.
The survivor, a fellow student, accused Mishra of raping her on campus on June 25 while two associates—Pramit Mukhopadhyay and Zaib Ahmed—recorded the assault to blackmail her. All three men have been arrested.
As more testimonies surface, the case has triggered public outrage. Students and women’s groups are demanding strict legal action against the accused and a deeper probe into how such a repeat offender remained untouched for so long. They are also calling for institutional accountability from the college authorities who allegedly failed to protect students or act on repeated complaints.
This case has now become a disturbing symbol of how unchecked power and political immunity can allow predators to thrive, leaving vulnerable students to fend for themselves in what should be safe educational spaces.
