PANAJI: In the wake of upcoming Holi celebrations and recent safety concerns, the North Goa Collector has directed authorities to verify whether organisers of “Holi parties” across the district have obtained the necessary government licences and permissions.
The move follows a complaint by Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS), which raised concerns after the recent nightclub fire incident at Arpora. The organisation urged authorities to ensure that nightclubs and river cruises hosting Holi-themed events comply with safety regulations and statutory requirements. It also demanded action against organisers permitting minors to participate in such parties.
Taking cognisance of the complaint, the North Goa Collector has issued directions to the Superintendent of Police (North Goa), the Chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee, the Director of the Women and Child Welfare Department, and the Secretary of the Candolim Panchayat to conduct an urgent inquiry and submit a compliance report.
The Collector has specifically ordered verification of permissions obtained for such events and directed that action be initiated against organisers allowing children above the age of eight to attend these parties.
In its representation, HJS stated that several nightclubs and river cruises are hosting Holi parties featuring rain dance, pool events, Bollywood DJs and dhol performances. The group also alleged that the “Hyatt Centric Holi Bash” proposes to serve unlimited beer and other alcoholic beverages while allowing participation of children above eight years of age.
According to the Samiti, such events could distort the traditional and sacred nature of the Hindu festival of Holi, and it has called for immediate intervention by authorities.
