Panaji: Alarmed by a rise in fatal and serious road accidents, the North Goa District Road Safety Committee (DRSC) has resolved to strengthen coordination among departments and seek expert medical inputs to enhance road safety measures across the district.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Additional Collector-I Gurudas Desai, where members noted the growing number of accidents resulting in deaths and grievous injuries. To better understand injury patterns and causes of fatalities, the committee decided to invite a representative from the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) to participate in future DRSC meetings.
As part of its preventive strategy, the committee resolved to recommend the formation of children transportation committees in all schools, aimed at ensuring safer travel for students. The Tourism Department will also be brought on board to reinforce road safety efforts, particularly in view of the high number of road accidents involving tourists in the State.
The meeting was attended by Superintending Engineer (PWD) and Member Secretary Jude A. D. Carvalho; Rajesh B. Naik, Chairman of the Lead Agency; DySP Traffic (North) Sudesh Narvekar; GOACAN Coordinator Roland Martins; Sudesh Velip (HQ) North; and B. A. Sawant, Additional Director of Transport (North), among other officials.
Members reviewed recent guidelines issued by the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety (SCCoRS) and discussed the preparation of the Action Taken Report for North Goa district. The committee also examined a preliminary inspection report of approach roads to Karmali Railway Station and deliberated on measures to tackle the problem of stray cattle along National Highways.
Additionally, the DRSC decided to launch an awareness campaign against drink-and-drive violations, promote the Rah Veer (Good Samaritan) Scheme, and observe National Road Safety Month from January 1 to 31, 2026, throughout North Goa.
